The Salty Sow – Austin, TX

New York Roots to Southern Boots

Happy Thursday!

During our Thanksgiving weekend in Austin, TX, we had a friends’ dinner at The Salty Sow. I’ve seen a few people post pictures of it on Instagram and talk about triple fried duck fat fries. After you’ve stopped drooling about that image in your head, read on and enjoy my review!

Located just east of the University of Texas, Salty Sow is one of the newer restaurants inhabiting the Manor Road area east of I-35. Normally, Austin is known for its music and arts, but its food scene rivals that of Houston and Dallas. Salty Sow has the type of atmosphere where you can enjoy an after work cocktail, weekend brunch, or a date night dinner. The lighting is adorned with forks and piping around the room helped add to the ambiance.

But let us get to why you are really reading. . .food and drinks!

First up, Curly Tail margarita. A lovely mix of sweet and spicy, which made my heart really happy. They actually put jalapenos in the ice cubes, so with every sip, you got a little bit of heat. Which if course the only fix for fire breath, is more margaritas. It’s pure science, people. If you can’t make it to The Salty Sow, you can make your own jalapeno infused margarita, using this recipe I wrote earlier this year.

Triple Fried Duck Fat Fries topped with a 110 minute egg and served with cold bearnaise sauce. Normal fries will never be the same. I’m still not really sure what a 110 minute egg is since it just seemed like an over easy egg to me.

I ordered the Crisp Chicken Thighs, and it was LOVE at first bite. The chicken was full of flavor and the crispy skin added the right amount of texture.

Maybe they ran out of dishes, but Brandon’s meal came out in a pan. He ordered the Slow Cooked Beef Shoulder with mashed potatoes, veggies and a fried egg. I think he only gave me one bite and he devoured the rest. Maybe he “won” dinner and didn’t want to rub it in, but I “won” in the game of cocktails.

We were so happy to spend time with some of our Austin friends the night before Thanksgiving and the Texas Tech game, and the Salty Sow was the perfect place.

As always, thank  you so much for stopping by!

Final Update – Fall Bucket List

Now that November is over, it’s time to conclude my Fall Bucket List. You can read about them here and here.

Go to the zoo

IMG_2907[1]IMG_2904[1]Brandon and I went to Feast with the Beast at the Houston Zoo a few weeks ago. It kind of counts as a zoo trip, but we will have to go back during the day time. Most of October and November was REALLY hot in Houston, so I think with the cooler weather in December it will be a more enjoyable time.

Decorate my front porch with pumpkins and mums
The front porch had a lovely pumpkin and some mums, but I forgot to take a picture before the mums died. #bloggerfail

Go to a pumpkin patch

New York Roots to Southern Boots
We went to a pumpkin patch at the church down the road from our house. They had a great selection of pumpkins, but they were a little pricey.

Watch Hocus Pocus

After we passed out candy, we watched Hocus Pocus while playing this drinking game. We had a lot of fun, but one of us who will remain nameless, fell asleep.

Carve/Decorate a pumpkin
Pumpkins were not carved or decorated this year, boo.

Make smores
Does drinking a toasted graham latte from Starbucks count?? No? Ok, well this item can’t be checked off either.

Pass out Halloween candy

I am happy to report that the $20 I spent on Halloween candy, went to the children. Well, most of it at least. Parents, please do not send me the bill from your dentist.

Watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade

I was able to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from the comfort of my hotel room in Austin, TX. I love the parade so much and I was so happy to continue the tradition.

I’ll post my winter/Christmas bucket list last this week. It should be a good one since we are going somewhere REALLY special for Christmas!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
