During our Thanksgiving weekend in Austin, TX, we had a friends’ dinner at The Salty Sow. I’ve seen a few people post pictures of it on Instagram and talk about triple fried duck fat fries. After you’ve stopped drooling about that image in your head, read on and enjoy my review!
Located just east of the University of Texas, Salty Sow is one of the newer restaurants inhabiting the Manor Road area east of I-35. Normally, Austin is known for its music and arts, but its food scene rivals that of Houston and Dallas. Salty Sow has the type of atmosphere where you can enjoy an after work cocktail, weekend brunch, or a date night dinner. The lighting is adorned with forks and piping around the room helped add to the ambiance.
But let us get to why you are really reading. . .food and drinks!
First up, Curly Tail margarita. A lovely mix of sweet and spicy, which made my heart really happy. They actually put jalapenos in the ice cubes, so with every sip, you got a little bit of heat. Which if course the only fix for fire breath, is more margaritas. It’s pure science, people. If you can’t make it to The Salty Sow, you can make your own jalapeno infused margarita, using this recipe I wrote earlier this year.
Triple Fried Duck Fat Fries topped with a 110 minute egg and served with cold bearnaise sauce. Normal fries will never be the same. I’m still not really sure what a 110 minute egg is since it just seemed like an over easy egg to me.
I ordered the Crisp Chicken Thighs, and it was LOVE at first bite. The chicken was full of flavor and the crispy skin added the right amount of texture.
Maybe they ran out of dishes, but Brandon’s meal came out in a pan. He ordered the Slow Cooked Beef Shoulder with mashed potatoes, veggies and a fried egg. I think he only gave me one bite and he devoured the rest. Maybe he “won” dinner and didn’t want to rub it in, but I “won” in the game of cocktails.
We were so happy to spend time with some of our Austin friends the night before Thanksgiving and the Texas Tech game, and the Salty Sow was the perfect place.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by!
